Guía Pro: Cómo mantener tu joyería de plata brillante por más tiempo

Pro Guide: How to keep your silver jewelry shiny for longer

Have you ever stored a silver necklace away, only to find it dark or tarnished months later? Don't worry, it doesn't mean your jewelry is of poor quality. Silver is a noble metal that naturally reacts to sulfur in the air and the pH of our skin in a process called oxidation.

At Corazón Artesanal, we want your favorite pieces to look as good as the first day. That is why I am sharing my best tips here for caring for and cleaning your silver jewelry.

1. The "Final Touch" to your Outfit

The golden rule is: Your jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.

  • Avoid direct contact: Perfumes, lotions, sunscreens, and hairspray contain chemicals that accelerate silver oxidation. Apply your beauty products, wait for them to dry, and there you go—it’s time for jewelry.

2. Say goodbye to humidity

Silver and water (especially seawater or chlorinated pools) are not best friends.

  • Take them off to bathe: Soap and hard water can leave residues.

  • Be careful at the gym: Sweat can quickly alter the shine of silver due to its acidity.

3. Smart storage

Don't leave your jewelry out on your vanity. Air is the main culprit behind silver darkening.

  • Individual pouches: Store each piece in a soft cloth pouch or a resealable (Ziploc-style) bag. This prevents them from scratching each other and limits contact with oxygen.

  • Cool, dry place: Avoid keeping your jewelry in the bathroom; the steam from the shower is fatal to the shine of metals.

4. How to clean them at home?

If you notice your piece has lost its shine or is starting to look yellowish, follow these steps:

  • Microfiber cloth: This is the safest option. Rub gently in a straight line (avoid circles to prevent scratching).

  • Neutral soap: If it is dirty, use warm water and a drop of neutral liquid soap. Scrub with a very soft-bristled toothbrush and, most importantly, dry thoroughly with a soft cloth. Moisture is the enemy!

Expert Tip: If your piece has natural stones, be very careful. Some stones are porous and should not be submerged in chemical silver cleaning solutions because they could become dull.

Conclusion

Caring for your jewelry is an act of love toward those pieces that tell your story. With these small habits, your silver will maintain that elegant white shine we love so much for years.
